Buying Human Braiding Hair for the First Time: A Plain Guide

If you have only ever bought synthetic packs, the jump to human hair is disorienting. The prices are different, the formats have names nobody explains, and every site assumes you already know what a closure is.

Here are the five decisions, in the order they should be made.

1. Format — decide this first

Get this wrong and the hair is unusable. There are three.

  • Bulk — loose hair, no attachment. Braided into your own. This is what boho knotless braids need. $90 to $150.
  • Wefted — sewn onto a track. For sew-ins. $120 to $190.
  • Crochet — pre-looped, hooked through cornrows. Fastest install. $105 to $145.

If you are getting boho braids, you want bulk. Full comparison in Wefted Bundles or Bulk Hair? and Crochet or Knotless Braids?

2. Texture

Seven of them, and the names are not self-explanatory:

  • Deep Wave — even S-wave, our best seller
  • Body Wave — the loosest, a soft bend
  • Italian Curl — rounder, springier curl
  • Water Curl — between wavy and curly, less uniform
  • Wet & Wavy — tightens when wet
  • Burmese Curly — the softest curl
  • Deep Curly — the tightest

If you cannot decide, Deep Wave is where most people start. Side by side in Braiding Hair Textures Compared.

3. Length

Bulk comes in 12, 18 and 24 inches. Price steps are $90, $120, $150 per 100g bundle.

One thing to know: braiding hair reads shorter than the number suggests, because the curl pattern takes up length. A 24 inch curly bundle does not hang like 24 inches of straight hair.

4. Colour

Natural black is 1b. Everything else is a number: 4 medium brown, 8 light ash brown, 27 honey blonde, 30 auburn, 350 copper, 613 platinum, 99J wine, plus burgundy.

In stock, Deep Wave has eight shades at 18 inches and Body Wave has six. Everything else is natural black on the shelf — but all nine shades exist in every texture up to 24 inches made to order, at the same price. See Custom Color Braiding Hair.

The full shade breakdown is in Hair Color Numbers Explained.

5. How much

This is where the real cost sits, and where price comparisons against cheap packs fall apart.

Look Bundles At 18"
Light boho 1 $120
Natural volume 2–3 $240–$360
Very full 4 $480

Why it costs what it costs

You will find 100g of "human braiding hair" for $25 to $40 on marketplaces. Some of it is genuinely human hair. Much of it is a blend, or hair processed heavily enough to behave like fibre after the first wash — and no listing photo will tell you which.

What you are paying for here is 100% human hair, a true 100g per bundle, hair that takes colour and heat because it is hair, and a named business with a working salon in Ridgeland, Mississippi. If something is wrong with your order, there is someone to reach.

Four practical rules

  • Ask your braider which format they want before you order. One message saves a return.
  • Buy every bundle in one purchase. Natural hair batches differ, and on a bright shade it shows.
  • Free US shipping starts at $200, which most installs clear.
  • All sales are final — exchanges or store credit within 14 days if unused.
