Crochet or Knotless Braids? Pick the Install First, the Hair Second

People usually pick the texture first and the install second. That is backwards, because the two formats need different hair — and the hair you buy for one cannot be used for the other.

The short version

Crochet Knotless braids
What you buy Pre-looped crochet hair Bulk hair
How it attaches Hooked through a cornrow base Braided into your own hair
Chair time Short Long
Take-down Quick Slow
Lengths 14–22" 12–24"
Price $105–$145 per piece $90–$150 per 100g bundle

What each one actually looks like

Crochet reads as loose hair. The cornrow base is hidden underneath and what shows is the texture itself — waves or curls falling freely. Nobody sees a braid.

Knotless braids read as braids. The braid is the look, and on a boho install the curly ends left free are the accent. If what you have in mind is that specific boho silhouette — a clean braid with curls escaping down its length — that is bulk hair and nothing else will do it.

The time question, honestly

This is the real reason most people switch. A full boho knotless install is a long appointment. Crochet is a fraction of that, because the labour is in the cornrow base rather than in every braid.

If you are booking around work, childcare or a trip, that difference matters more than any texture comparison.

How much to buy

For crochet, count pieces by head coverage — your braider will tell you, and it varies more with your own hair than with the product.

For knotless braids, count by fullness: one bundle for a light boho look, two to three for natural volume, four for very full. That puts a real install at $240 to $600 depending on length. The breakdown is in How Many Packs of Braiding Hair Do You Need?

Color availability differs, and it matters

This catches people out.

Crochet comes in natural black across all seven textures. Deep Wave and Body Wave crochet also carry color at 18 inches — shades 4, 8, 27, 30, 613, plus 350 and 99J on Deep Wave.

Bulk goes much wider. Every texture is available in nine shades up to 24 inches through Custom Color Bulk Hair, explained in Custom Color Braiding Hair.

So if color is the priority, bulk gives you far more room. If speed is the priority, crochet does — within a narrower palette.

A decision in three questions

Do you want the braid to show? Yes means bulk. No means crochet.

How long can you sit? If the honest answer is "not all day", crochet.

Is there a specific shade you have your heart set on? If it is not one of the crochet colors, you are buying bulk.

Once you have the format, pick the texture: Braiding Hair Textures Compared. And the full crochet range is in our crochet guide.
